REDUCE - REUSE - RECYCLE 

The 3Rs concept was first mentioned at the 2004 Economic Forum of Island States in the US. The concept was identified as a ministerial-level environmental protection activity in Japan in 2005. After 15 years of development, the 3Rs idea has gradually been absorbed and become the core spirit for scientific research and environmental protection activities such as JSMCWM, KSWM, UNCRD or ISWA. In the last 2 years, Vietnam has also actively participated to propagate ideas about 3Rs activities in the country after the World Economic Forum 2020 (ISC, Tokyo 2020).

REDUCE AND REUSE

Reduce and Reuse captures the dominant spirit of the 3Rs concept in question. Complete reductions are achieved through the restriction of production and consumption activities that lead to waste. Reduction and reuse occur in all aspects of society, from reducing emissions to the environment, saving electricity and water or simply reusing milk cartons, bottles, and materials to be sustainable and extend the life of use to minimize supply,  in parallel, it leads to a decrease in demand, creating a positive domino effect on the environment.

RECYCLE 

Recycling is a more complex operation than Reduce and Reuse, due to the requirements from collecting and treating with technology to reproduce new environmentally friendly finished product outputs. However, recycling also contributes significantly to the protection of Mother Nature through the use and conservation of natural and energy-saving materials. A survey by REI (Recycling Economic Information, 2016) found that the recycling industry helped create 681,000 new jobs, contributing $5.5 billion to public revenues for the government.

DAILY 3Rs PRACTICE

Small action, big impacts. Here are 5 simple steps that can help you practice 3Rs in your daily life:

1. Consider before shopping: your bluff shopping can lead to hazardous waste emissions, think and act.
2. Reduce food waste: smart shopping and consumption, sharing the left over with charity organizations will bring positive energy to you and the community.
3. Having a plan to check, maintain and repair: "durability in humans" is never wrong, maintaining the above chain of activities at a regular and reasonable level is not only a smart way to consume, but also shows your love for Mother Nature.
4. Know before you throw: Currently, Vietnamese law also has regulations on the origin of waste sorting. It will take some time to practice the above habit, however, the benefits of waste sorting are not deniable, but also help propagate and raise consumer and community awareness.
5. Charity: with the long-standing good tradition of “sharing is caring” of VNM culture, regularly giving away items and items that are no longer used to the community is a practical action, and should be encouraged and followed in modern society.
